The monastery, the caravels and the Botanical Park
La Rábida packs three different visits into a very small area. The 15th-century Monastery of Santa María de La Rábida is where Columbus stayed and where Friar Juan Pérez interceded so the Catholic Monarchs would hear his plan. The Muelle de las Carabelas, on the river, lets you board full-size replicas of the three ships — the part children enjoy most. Around it lies the José Celestino Mutis Botanical Park, with species brought from the Americas.
It is also home to the International University of Andalusia, so there are courses and conferences for much of the year, with transfers from Huelva, the station and both airports.
As it is a short trip, most people book it as a return with waiting time: the site is fairly isolated and finding transport back can take a while. It combines well with Palos de la Frontera and Moguer to cover all three Columbus Sites in one morning.
